The North East - Tradition and History
Known as Issan, this huge region covers about one-third of the entire country. A large plateau, the region has some of the oldest remains in Thailand with fossils and artifacts indicating an ancient Bronze Age civilization dating back 4,000-7,000 years ago. | ||
| Udon Thani province, covering an area of 11,730 square kilometers, is located 550 kilometers north east from Bangkok. Most of it is covered with rice fields, forests and hills. Udon Thani is the transportation and communications hub of the upper Northeast and gateway to Vientiane, Laos. There are many sightseeing activities including historical parks, dinosaur museums, water falls, caves and many Thai wats. It has the UNESCO World Heritage Archaeological Site for the prehistoric culture of Ban Chiang, where the world's first Bronze Age civilization is believed to have flourished more than 5,000 years ago.
